Award Date: Mar 02, 2010
Awarded to: Cunningham Children's Home was awarded $1500
Project description: Cunningham's Advancement Department staff work in Raiser's Edge every day, entering gifts, pulling reports, and referring to records containing donor information. While we are proficient in using this software, we feel we are not maximizing the ways Raiser's Edge could work for us. Issues range from consistency and quality control to pulling more complicated queries; and we have long known of the need for more customized consultation on our database. When we learned of the Lumpkin Foundation micro-grants this year, we decided to apply although our budget is not in your preferred range because we believe this training is so essential, yet so difficult for us to plan for in our current budget climate. While extensive trainings are offered every year for our direct care staff, and our Board of Directors is planning to receive in-house training by a consultant who is donating his fees, we find that training for our fundraising professionals is both expensive and difficult to explain to most donors and funders, who expect organizations to direct their financial support to direct services. The grants funds of jumi,500 would be applied to the total anticipated cost of [scripts/grants/grants_main.php],570 for consultant’s fee and travel costs for a one day consultation. Ms. Marziala will visit Cunningham and customize the standard MMC Canada training program to our specific fundraising needs. If we are more efficient in our fundraising operations, we will save our organization money while helping to bring more resources to support the needs of our youth; but these are tight budget times. We are therefore grateful for the opportunity to apply for a grant program that specifically supports professional development for administrative staff. While this training is not inexpensive, the cost of sending one staff to a regional Raiser's Edge Training in Chicago would be in the range of jumi,500 including transportation and accommodations. For slightly more, all six members of our Advancement Department team can receive highly-recommended, customized and relevant training on how to improve our information management systems.
Eastern Illinois Foodbank was awarded $752.8
Project description: The Foodbank has seen a 30% increase in demand for emergency food over the last fiscal year. Consequently, our agencies and programs have been expanding to keep pace. My position as Development and Agency Relations Assistant was created in August of 2009 in response to an increased need for staff capacity to support this rapid growth. The Foodbank operates on very limited resources with a staff of twelve full-time employees. Before my position was created, there was just one full-time staff person devoted to monitoring, supporting, and managing 220 distinct agencies and programs. As my responsibilities in Agency Relations are being expanded, it has become essential that I rapidly increase my knowledge in this area. By attending this conference I will gain valuable information regarding efficiency, organization and interaction with Foodbank agencies and programs. I will also be able to network with and gain knowledge of best practices from experienced professionals in the food banking sector. Attending this conference will be exceptionally valuable in building my knowledge and skills to add value to our agency relations department and to allow the Foodbank to continue to grow to meet the needs of people at risk of hunger.
YMCA of the University of Illinois was awarded $800
Project description: The purpose of our request is to provide Annual Fund sustainability training for Rebecca Guyette. Now finishing her 7th year with the University YMCA and 4th year as Development Director, Rebecca has implemented the first strategic annual fund drive for the University YMCA in over 10 years. After implementing this fund drive in the fall of 2009, it was apparent additional annual fund sustainability training was needed. The objective is to create a long-term annual fund drive plan that will help the University YMCA increase it's annual giving capacity. Two years ago Rebecca attended the Fundraising School's Principles and Techniques of Fundraising and feels this will be a critical addition to her professional development for the University YMCA.

Awarded to: Girls on the Run of Central Illinois was awarded $1400
Project description: Deb Shultz is the current Executive Director (volunteer). In January 2011, she will become Board Chair and Tracy Zeman will become Executive Director (paid). Both women will attend the training to focus on program growth and managing a larger organization. Deb has led the program as a volunteer for 7 years through the Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield. In 1/2010, Girls on the Run of Central Illinois was established, so the program could be aggressively expanded to serve more girls. Our 3 year goal is to grow the number of girls served per year from 200 to 700. This significant growth requires us to develop additional fundraising, volunteer management, program evaluation, etc. skills. The training also provides the opportunity for Tracy, the new Executive Director to develop mentoring contacts from other Girls on the Run councils and meet national organization leaders.

Mid-Illinois Big Brothers Big Sisters was awarded $800
Project description: The purpose of this request is to provide funds to allow Mid-Illinois Big Brothers Big Sisters to address board governance changes, engage the Effingham Advisory Committee in the planning process and get new board members, veteran board members, staff and committee members "on the same page" as we move forward. We expect to engage the Effingham Advisory Committee in planning for future growth in Effingham County. We will develop a strategic plan for the entire agency which incorporates many of the goals developed during the first event and which discusses the process by which the agency will maintain engagement and communication with the committee. The "mini" retreat which is the final event will bring everyone together to celebrate success and commit to the future through the strategic plan developed during the first two events. We believe this process will bring all partners to the table, develop trust and commitment and bring focus to our future plans.
Unit 40 Mentor Program was awarded $1200
Project description: The Unit 40 Mentoring Program recently formed a Sustainability Committee to meet the financial needs of the program when funding was cut from the Unit 40 budget. Short term financial needs for the Mentoring Program have been met. Now the Sustainability Committee has the task of moving forward to find funding sources that will sustain the program into the future, securing it, if necessary, to stand independent from Unit 40's budget. This one day training retreat, and later follow-up visit, will involve the program supervisor, facilitators, and committee members. The Consultant will help define the role of the committee, and establish future financial goals for the Program. We expect that by taking advantage of the knowledge and expertise of a planning consultant, we will have a better, more efficient plan of action, to best assist us in achieveing a secure financial future.
