Have you ever been in a situation where the board has made a decision that you think is very wrong and will have severe negative consequences for the organization? Or where you think an important decision has been railroaded through?

Betsy Brill, writing in Forbes, argues that nonprofit CEOs are worth every dime that they are paid. She pushes back against people who think nonprofit CEOs don’t deserve to be paid well.
Donors should not reflexively become alarmed by what may seem like high executive pay. Successful nonprofit leaders not only have a commitment to the mission of the organization, but also possess business management acumen on par with corporate executives.
The article encourages Americans not to make decisions about which organizations to support based solely on how low their overhead costs might be, but instead, to base decisions on an analysis of the results an organization is able to achieve.

A nonprofit tax-exempt status is a privilege: It has to be earned and it needs to be maintained. With privilege comes expectation and a nonprofit must know to whom it is accountable. A myriad of agencies, statutes and individuals regulate a nonprofit’s activities.
BoardSource’s latest White Paper, “Regulating and Monitoring Nonprofits – Balancing Compliance and Best Practices”, sheds light on some of those bodies and regulations that oversee, sanction, guide or place specific expectations on nonprofits. It is incumbent upon the board to be aware of these entities as part of its own primary duty of organizational oversight.
